Quote:Star Wars: Rogue One cannot be promoted until after Summer 2015.

Star Wars: Rogue One and Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation are just a little too close for comfort for the studios but an agreement has been reached over the similarities between the first Star Wars stand-alone film’s title and Mission Impossible’s next installment.

The Hollywood Reporter writes:

Sources say Disney didn’t clear its title, meaning Paramount could have fought to block Disney and Lucasfilm from using it at all, even though Rogue One won’t open until Dec. 16, 2016, long after Rogue Nation has come and gone.

Instead, the two studios quickly worked out a deal whereby Disney will refrain from referring to Rogue One this summer in any promotional materials aimed at the general consumer (an exception is a Star Wars fan event in April).

The indirect mention of Star Wars Celebration might mean we’re going to get a cool announcement from the event. But then again, it might just mean it can be referenced without breaking the agreement.

I get it. I do. But I also think the idea Star Wars: Rogue One and Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation is going to confuse anyone is silly. Anyone that dumb is probably too dumb to matter at the box-office. It’s fairly silly if you ask me.

The agreement will mean they will have to refer to the film as something else like “Star Wars’ first stand-alone film” if they cover the filming in any fashion. There has been an assumption that Star Wars: The Force Awakens had scant coverage and continues to have scant coverage because of Bad Robot’s policies and direction. Fans have assumed that Star Wars: Rogue One would be a little more fan friendly than that. However, this agreement might mean the title can’t be used during some of those crucial months the movie is likely to be filming. That might mean updates and promotion might not begin until after the Summer.
